How can psychotherapy help?
We all have periods in our life when we suffer. This can take a myriad of forms that can only be touched upon here. We could be suffering with the loss of a dear one or grieving the end of a relationship. We may find ourselves feeling depressed and plagued with negative thoughts. We may be stuck in patterns of behaviour that cause suffering to those around us and feel a deep sense of shame. It could be that we cannot find any meaning in our lives, and we feel lost without any purpose or direction. The list of ways we can suffer is endless.
Sometimes we cannot see a way out and need help. Psychotherapy can help by providing a compassionate and safe space in which to explore our experience. My own therapy has taught me the most valuable aspect of psychotherapy is the relationship. This special relationship enables the exploration of thoughts and feelings that are not always possible to do with friends and family. Subsequently, the therapist can act as guide to help us through difficult times. By listening at a deep level and providing an open and non-judgemental environment the therapist can allow the client to fully engage with their difficulties and thereby discover the source of their suffering. This is a collaborative journey of discovery that can ultimately lead to more freedom and contentment.
